For some reason, Batman never experienced the radio success enjoyed by that other DC comics hero, Superman. He and his sidekick Robin appeared from time to time in the Superman show from 1945 onwards, but they had two pilots of their own, both failures. The first, The Case of the Drowning Seal, starring Scott Douglas as Batman, no longer exists. The second pilot, The Monster of Dumphreys Hall, starred John Emery as Batman and Ronald Liss as Robin, the role he'd played in the Superman series.

Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance on American radio in 1930, in an adaptation of The Speckled Band starring William Gillette as the Great Detective and Leigh Lovell as his faithful assistant Dr Watson. A weekly run of Holmes adventure began a week later, with Richard Gordon replacing Gillette. This episode hails from the penultimate series, and stars John Stanley as Holmes and Wendell Holmes as Watson (though he was billed as George Splevin, to avoid any confusion over Watson being portrayed by Holmes).
